When using a digital image as a reference, you bring the photo into the painting environment and create a tracing paper overlay and paint on the layers, picking up the underlying colors. The results vary depending on which media brushes you use. It can be a lot of fun, but also take up a considerable amount of time when you keep chasing the small details.
